Mini Quilts - Hamsters, Raccoons and a Rainbow Unicorn

Rainbow Unicorn 24" x 24"

No one can say that I haven't kept myself busy lately.

This week I finished 3 mini quilts!

The first mini quilt is the Rainbow Unicorn. The pattern provides instructions for three different sizes. I chose the one that finishes at 24" square.

I have made it before. You can view my other Rainbow Unicorn finishes here.

This time I used the "spiral" horn option.

The Rainbow Unicorn pattern provides instructions for three sizes. The blocks are 10" 20" and 40" square and finish at 12", 24" and 48" square including the borders.

The Rainbow Unicorn comes with instructions to make with either a solid horn or a spiral horn.

I added corner tabs for hanging these quilts. I took 3" squares, pressed them on the diagonal, placed them on the top corners of the finished quilts with raw edges even with the edges of the quilt, and then stitched them in place before sewing on the binding. Then all you need to do is drill a hole in the center of a yard stick after cutting it to the correct length. And you can hang these quilts invisibly.

The quilting on each of these 3 mini quilts was performed using my walking foot to create organic wavy lines with white thread both on top and in the bobbin.

It felt great to use some of the new prints I shared about in these posts. And I paired them up with some solids for the white and black and then the grey Tic-Tac-Toe from the Hopscotch collection by Jamie Fingal for RJR Fabrics was used for the background. Fabrics from my stash were used for the backings and bindings.

You can find the block pattern for the Raccoon here.

And the block pattern for the Hamster is here.

Mini Quilts and a Quilted Pillow

My Pet Hamster mini quilt 24" x 26"

I have been feeling a little stressed lately. But sewing helps!

Even just ironing fabric helps.

My thoughts are all over the place.
I'm all over the place.

And this post is really all over the place.

These two mini quilts have been on my mental bucket list for quite a while now. So after finishing the Panda Please quilt I shared on Friday, I cut into those new fabrics I recently purchased and made up the Raccoon mini quilt shown below.

And the next day I made the My Pet Hamster mini quilt shown above.

It felt great to use some of those new prints before they settled into my stash for long. And I paired them up with some solids for the white and black and then the grey Tic-Tac-Toe from the Hopscotch collection by Jamie Fingal for RJR Fabrics was used for the background.

You can find the block pattern for the Raccoon here.
And the block pattern for the Hamster is here.

I have also been working on a new pattern called Kitten Kaboodle. The pattern calls for 6 kitten blocks, but I only wanted to make one kitten and then turned him into a quilted pillow.

I found some grey, pink and green Toscana from Northcott Fabrics in my stash from making the Jungle Friends quilt and used those for making the kitten. For the background, backing of the pillow and the binding, I found these leftovers from making the Ay, Chihuahua!

I found a zipper to match and made a hidden zipper closure.

Unlike when I bind a quilt, for this quilted pillow I sewed the binding to the front and then top stitched to finish from the back.

The quilting is organic wavy lines in white.

The "Kitten Kaboodle" quilted pillow finished at 13" x 20"
and was the 51st use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Here is how the Kitten Kaboodle quilt pattern is laid out.

I reached out to a few pattern testers for this one and Susie of Susie's Sunroom obliged. Please click here to see her mini Kitten Kaboodle quilt top!

Raccoon Mini

This Raccoon Mini quilt was a really fun make! I love the rainbow feel of this wee quilt. It's refreshing for me to be able to dig into those solids every now and again.

These are not my first sneaky raccoons.....

There was an entire quilt full here.....

And some of those raccoons, shared in that post, were half sized blocks.
The babies were especially cute!

I had some leftover fabric from making the backing for my original Dog Gone Cute quilt that I used to piece the backing for this mini. It's Windy Day in Aqua from the Backyard Baby collection by Patty Sloniger for Michael Miller Fabrics. I love the soft blues and greens. And the pop of contrasting orange used to make those wee birds.

I added corner tabs for hanging this mini. All you need to do is drill a hole in the center of a yard stick after cutting it to the correct length. Then you can hang this mini invisibly. I think it would look adorable in a nursery!

I considered using a solid for the binding, but then I spied this sweet green piece from Northcott Fabrics hanging around in my stash and felt it made the perfect fresh frame.

The quilting was performed using my walking foot to create organic wavy lines with white thread both on top and in the bobbin.

The "Raccoon" mini quilt finished at 26.5" x 26.5"
and was the 41st use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

You can find the Raccoon Block pattern here in my shop

The block pattern includes instructions for both the full size and half size blocks. And the instructions for turning the full size blocks into a mini quilt can be found here.
