High Heel Shoe quilt block tutorial

Some shoe fanatic inspired me to design this quilt.

And today I am sharing the High Heel Shoe quilt block tutorial with you!

High Heel Shoe block finishes at 6” x 9”

Sew Fresh Quilts – High Heel Shoe block

Read through entire instructions before beginning.  Press seams open as you go.

STOP: Stitch, Trim, Open & Press. To perform the STOP method, align a square (A) or rectangle (C) on the corner of the unit (B) with right sides facing together. Draw a diagonal line and sew along this diagonal line. Trim a ¼” seam. Finger press the seam open and then press with a hot iron. Press all seams open to reduce bulk.

For each SHOE block:
Background
D
1 @ 1.5” square
F
1 @ 2” square
B
1 @ 1” x 4.5”
J
1 @ 3” x 4.5”
M
1 @ 4.5” x 8”
Dark

A
1 @ 1” x 1.5”
C
1 @ 1” x 9.5”
Medium
E
1 @ 1.5” x 4”
G
1 @ 2” x 9.5”
L
1 @ 4.5” x 5.5”
Light
K
1 @ 4.5” x 5”
For each ROW:
Background
N
2 @ 2” x 36.5”

Step 1:  Use the STOP method to add the Light (K) rectangle to the Background (M) rectangle, by aligning the bottom right corners. Then add the Medium (L) rectangle in the same manner. Use the STOP method to add the Background (D) square.

Step 2:  Sew the Medium (G) to the Dark (C). Use the STOP METHOD to add the Background (F) square. Sew this onto the bottom of the unit made previously.

Step 3:  Sew the Medium (E) to the Dark (A) and then add the Background (J) and (B) to the sides. Use the STOP method to add this onto the bottom of the unit made previously to complete the SHOE block. Make 4 SHOE blocks. Block measures 6.5” by 9.5” and will finish at 6” x 9”.

Step 4:  Sew the SHOE blocks together and add the Background (N) strips to the top and bottom to complete the ROW. Row measures 9.5” by 36.5” and will finish at 9” x 36”

Chicken Ranch

What's this? Well.... It's not another Christmas quilt...

This is something that rarely happens. The Chicken Ranch was a finished quilt TOP that I shared back in late August in a Let's Bee Social post here. And then this quilt top hung in my sewing room for 6 months.

That is something unusual for me. I normally finish a top and then get it quilted up right away before starting something new. This is due to a promise that I made myself back when I started quilting. I know how easy it is to get swept away with the adrenalin rush that comes along with the excitement of starting a new project.

However, leaving this quilt top hanging there, unquilted, did give me the opportunity to enter it as an unquilted top in our little local fair this past fall. Only to be told that the seams were pressed "wrong". You see, the judges go through a training process that still stresses some longstanding (dare I say outdated?) views of what is the right way of doing things. And I am a press-all-the-seams-open kinda girl.

I quilted with my usual organic wavy lines, using Omni in grey on top to blend in with the background and a soft green in the bobbin to blend in with the backing.

The backing is a wideback print from the Northcott Fabrics Artisan Spirit collection. After quilting and squaring up the edges, I used the trimmings to make the binding. This is also the same fabric used in the Mama Hens wings.

This long overdue "Chicken Ranch" quilt finished at 55" x 70"
and was the 20th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Bear Paw block tutorial

Since I have been spending the past couple of weeks working on the Modernitional Bear Paw quilt, I thought it would be nice to share a simple tutorial for making the Bear Paw quilt block.

In my "Down on the Farm" post from June 23rd, I shared photos of all the calves born in the past two weeks. And a progress pic of the 940 half square triangles required to finish Step #1 in the Modernitional Bear Paw queen size quilt.

Since then, along with the help of my new Oliso iron.....

I completed the 240 PAW UNITS required to finish Step #2.

And to update the farmyard progress....

Pookie had a girl. Meet Midnight.

Bear Paw Quilt Block Tutorial

The following instructions will result in a 7.5” square block including seam allowances and will finish at 7” square. I press all my seams open. If you prefer to press to one side, when making the PAW UNITS press seams toward the Light Brown D square and when making and adding the sashing press toward the Background C rectangles.

Using an accurate 1/4" seam is required. For more information on how to test the accuracy of your 1/4" seam, please click here.

Step 1: Please note that the fabric squares should be ‘sandwiched’ with right sides facing together, and line up on all sides as accurately as possible. The diagram does not show this accuracy for demonstrative purposes. Draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of the Background (B) square. This is your guide line. Place the Background (B) square on the Light Brown (B) square and sew a ¼” seam on EACH SIDE of the blue line from edge to edge, as shown in red. Cut along the blue guide line. Press the seams open and trim each of the resulting Half Square Triangles (HST) to 1.5”. (For a more detailed guide on how to make these HST units please click here.)

Step 2:  Sew these HST units together in opposite pairs. Add the Background (A) square to the top set. Add the Light Brown (D) square to the bottom set. Sew the sets together to complete the PAW UNITS. Block will be 3.5” square including seam allowances and will finish at 3” square.

Step 3:  Sew the PAW UNITS to the sides of the Background (C) rectangles.

Step 4:  To make the CROSS SASHING, sew the Dark Brown (A) square between the Background (C) rectangles.

Step 5:  Sew the CROSS SASHING units between the PAW PAIR sets.

This simple block, used on it's own, would make a handsome traditional style baby quilt. The Grey sashing strips would measure 1.5" x 7.5" and would require Background 1.5" squares for cornerstones. This setting would measure 39" wide by 47" long.

BEAR PAW baby quilt finishes at 39" x 47"
