Foxy Strip Quilt and Pillowcase

Sometimes you just need a little sew time...

Most of the quilts I make are made to test the patterns I dream up. But this little quilt and matching pillowcase were made just for the sake of making.

I am seeking to use up some of the fabrics I have had lingering in my stash this year. And I still had a little bit of fabric left over from making the Fox among the Birches quilts and from selling quilt kits for those in my Etsy shop. You can see my first Fox among the Birches here and the second one here.

I have never made a strip quilt before. But have always wanted to. So this was the perfect time to take advantage of the fabrics I had left over. There was about 21" of Good Natured by Riley Blake Designs and about 18" of White Mandorla from Camelot Fabrics. I added in 6 strips of Kona Ash cut in 1.5" strips and 6 strips of Orange Dot from the Safari Collection by Northcott Fabrics.

For the backing, I had 47" of the Animal Toss in Pebble from the Forest Friends collection for MODA. The coordinating binding is Birch Trees, also in Pebble.

Because I still had a little of the binding fabric left over, and it was now looking so lonely, I decided to make a matching pillowcase. The pillowcase measures 14.5" x 26" and fits a 13" x 20" pillow form.

Of course the quilting was performed using my walking foot to create organic wavy lines with Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads on top and a slightly darker grey thread in the bobbin. The Omni has been used for a lot of quilting and is almost completely finished!

The "Foxy Strip" quilt finished at 42" x 46"
and was the 46th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

This set includes quilt, pillowcase and pillow insert and is now listed for sale in my shop here.

Let's Bee Social #184

Welcome to the Let's Bee Social!
So glad to have you join us for the Let's Bee Social weekly linky party!

This week 8 more baby foxes were born! These little foxes were made using Kona Tangerine and Kumquat against a Steel grey background.

This is certainly not the first time I have made these little 8" fox blocks. But it is the first time I have been happy with how the legs on the standing fox were pieced. As you can see in the photo below, the legs used to be made out of two long strips that were then joined along the horizontal seam. When I was making the fox blocks for the first Fox among the Birches quilt, I was not happy with how difficult it is to line up those diagonal legs where they join along that horizontal seam. So I changed how they were pieced and now the leg portion does not have that horizontal seam. Much better!

Now... It's your turn for Show and Tell!!!
What have you been working on?

Fox among the Birches

Thank you so much for the lovely compliments on this new design - Fox among the Birches.

While I was busy basting and getting this little quilt quilted, Fox among the Birches was being introduced on Wednesday at the Let's Bee Social. PDF download patterns were a big seller that day and I am so happy that all the quilt kits sold!

I used a new Omni-V (9036) variegated thread from Superior Threads, both on top and in the bobbin. And I love how well it has blended in with the background and yet remained rather subtle across the orange foxes.

The background is Kona Mushroom. The birch trees are made from White Mandorla from Camelot Fabrics and a dark brown/black and medium brown Toscana from Northcott Fabrics. The foxes are also pieced using selections from the Toscana line.

Part of the reason, I'm sure, that the quilt kits were such a big hit, is because of the coordinating backings that were featured. This backing is Good Natured by Riley Blake Designs.

Normally, I first attach the binding to the back and press toward the front before topstitching to finish. But this time I sewed it onto the front and then pressed to the back. Then I stitched in the ditch along the edge of the binding, catching the folded edge on the back with the bobbin thread. It's a bit trickier. But I like the thinner binding edge to be at the front sometimes. And then you aren't cutting off the points of your piecing either.

A little milestone was also achieved this week.... My Etsy shop has made over 5000 sales! Thank you so much for all your support! I am so grateful for all your kind comments, your likes on social media, and all the nice emails you send. You are what keeps me creating!

The "Fox among the Birches" baby quilt finished at 38" x 45"
and was the 36th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Aviary in Aqua by Michael Miller Fabrics

I loved working with the cotton couture and could not get over how soft those cottons are! And the Aviary backing? Gorgeous! Loved how well it blended in with the choices from the front and added a beautiful brightness to contrast with the woodsy feel of the front of the quilt. I am just so happy with these finishes!

Deer Hoof Prints and Bear blocks

Forest Friends is a sampler style design with a woodland theme and features animal quilt blocks made using traditional piecing methods. No templates. No paper piecing. Only simple straight line sewing and diagonal seams. Easy to follow instructions are provided for every step of the way! The Forest Friends pattern includes material requirements lists for both the TWIN and BABY size settings and charts for each quilt block, to make either a single block or a set of four blocks at once.

Fox #1 and Bear Paw Prints blocks

The Forest Friends quilt pattern consists of the following sized quilt blocks. The American Eagle, Canadian Beaver and the Love Birds blocks all finish at 8” x 13”. The Deer, Bear, Squirrel and both Fox blocks each finish at 8” x 8”. The Deer Hoof Prints, Bear Paws Prints and Canoe Paddle blocks all finish at 4” wide. This allows for a variety of settings in which your blocks can be used to make cushions, place mats, table runners, wall hangings or quilts from baby to big. Adding wider sashing and borders will also help you to adjust this pattern up to the size you desire.

Love Birds block

The Forest Friends pattern gives instructions for making all of the individual quilt blocks and provides additional information for the sashing and borders to make the above settings in BABY or TWIN size. But it is up to you to choose whether to use the layouts shown previously or to design your own setting to suit your particular application. Here are some other examples of how these blocks can be used. Don't be surprised if a quilted version of them are shown here on the blog in the coming month. Christmas is a comin'!
