Ducks in a Row

Have you got all your Ducks in a Row?

After sharing my Love Birds quilt last week, I was inspired to design another simple baby quilt with just a single row of piecing. I shared my EQ7 drawings for the Ducks in a Row design, showing the many possible colourways I had come up with, in this post.

I have been using prints a lot more lately. Not only am I trying to challenge myself to go out of my solids comfort zone.... But for this year I am also trying to resist making any fabric purchases. Instead I am shopping from my stash. The yellow and orange fabrics for the ducks are from the Fancy collection by Lily Ashbury for Moda Fabrics.

The background is the only text print I have in my stash. Thank goodness I had enough! It is Fairy Tales White from The Land That Never Was collection by Lisa Congdon for Cloud9 Fabrics.

Of course, the quilting is my usual organic wavy lines using my walking foot. I used plain white Gutermann thread both on top and in the bobbin. I chose to bind this little quilt in the wonky black and white grid print - to match the eyes and to provide a strong frame. This is Sylvia by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham Fabrics.

The backing is a really cute minky that I found at FabricLand. So soft and it provides a lovely drape for this little quilt. I love it!

The "Ducks in a Row" baby quilt finished at 38" x 42"
and was the 33rd use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

One of the things I love about this new pattern is that it can be made to suit a boy.... or a girl... or to be a gender neutral quilt - all depending upon what fabrics you choose!

This new pattern is called Ducks in a Row and you can find it listed here in my shop.

Love Birds

Meet the Parrots!

These love birds love hanging out together - some kissing - and some back to back.

I know that I have been using prints a lot more lately. I am trying to challenge myself to go out of my solids comfort zone. But for this one.... I could not resist digging back into my stash of solids to make this graphic lineup of love birds.

It is also quite unusual for me to leave a lot of negative space in my piecing. But for this quilt, I thought the effect of one row of birds was what this quilt needed. And the row of birds could also be used to make a table runner instead of a quilt!

Of course, the quilting is my usual organic wavy lines using my walking foot. I really got in the groove with this one and love how the waves turned out! I used plain white Gutermann thread both on top and in the bobbin. I chose to bind this little quilt in black - to match the eyes and to provide a strong frame.

The backing is Makin' Waves in Ink from the True Colors collection by Tula Pink for Free Spirit Fabrics, which you can view here. The boldness of this print is a great contrast to the front.

The "Love Birds" baby quilt finished at 40" x 48"
and was the 32nd use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

This new pattern is called Love Birds and you can find it listed here in my shop.
The pattern provides instructions for making BOTH.....
a Baby Quilt size 40" x 48" and a Table Runner size 14" x 38"

Forest Friends 2

It took a while...

But I finally made the Forest Friends 2 turn from a design idea into an actual quilt.

I am so excited to have transformed these new forest animals and birds into fabric form! All the fabric used in the front are from the Hopscotch collection by Jamie Fingal for RJR Fabrics, which you can view here.

RJR Fabrics offered to sponsor this project using their latest collection - Hopscotch by Jamie Fingal. I love these prints! They are cute and tiny geometric prints that "read like a solid". And the colours are amazing!

As I mentioned before.... The Forest Friends 2 design is compatible with the original Forest Friends design. Both patterns include a Twin size and Baby size option. All the block sizes are the same, so the blocks are interchangeable.

The quilting is organic wavy lines using my walking foot. I chose Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads on top and plain white Gutermann thread in the bobbin for the back.

The backing is from the Urban Artifacts collection by RJR Fabrics, which you can view here.  I am simply in LOVE with this print! The colours, the dots, the flowers and the text. It is just such a fun print!

The "Forest Friends 2" quilt finished at 59" x 75"
and was the 30th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

The original Forest Friends pattern is available here in my shop.

And the NEW Forest Friends 2 pattern is NOW available here in my shop.

Both patterns provides instructions for making two sizes.

TWIN Size finishes at 59” x 75”
BABY Size finishes at 31” x 39”

MOD Bear Paw - Baby Quilt Edition

It's the little baby bear paw... in blue!

Since September 3rd, I have been posting the instructions for the MOD Bear Paw quilt along. Although I did make the queen size version which I shared in this post, I wanted to make the baby size while participating in the quilt along. If you would like to quilt along, please check out the quilt along page here to see the schedule of instructions.

This size of quilt is perfect for basting right on my kitchen table. And for using a single piece for backing. For the quilting, I used a variegated thread from Superior Threads on top and chose a rich blue to match the backing in the bobbin. I quilted along the sashing strips from edge to edge and then quilted those wavy lines with my walking foot between.

All of these fabrics were found in my stash. And have been there for quite some time as they all came from way back when I would prewash all my fabrics before using them. I adore the little paw prints used for the blocks and binding. And the sashing fabric is a cute farm print. Some of my favourite pieces can be seen in the close ups below.

And this shot is just because I love the profile of that big bear ambling along....

Unlike the Lap and Queen size options which include a paw print border, the Baby and Crib size options finish without any border at all. To prevent the binding from covering the points at the edges of the quilt, after quilting I trimmed the batting and backing 1/8" larger than the top. Then I sewed the binding to the back of the quilt first by stitching from the front, catching the binding from beneath. Then I pressed the binding to the front and topstitched the binding to finish.

This quilt is perfect for a wee baby boy and is now listed in my Etsy shop!

In the spirit of creating transparency in this business, I want to share with you....

As of the end of August, I surpassed the $30.000 of income for the year. As of today, October 1st, I will have to begin charging Sales Tax. What does that mean for you? If you are an American or international fan of the Sew Fresh Quilts patterns or quilts, and you make a purchase from my Etsy shop.... Nothing will be any different.

However, if you are a Canadian.... The applicable taxes according to your residence will be automatically applied. But there is a silver lining... I have set up a special coupon code for my Canadian pals. Just email me for the details!

The "MOD Bear Paw" baby quilt finished at 39" x 47"
and was the 11th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.
