Sweater Weather for Quilty Magazine

Earlier this year, I was contacted by Quilty magazine. I was also approached to make a submission for a quilt to be featured in an upcoming issue. This was the design I settled on.

Elaborating on an earlier quilt I made called Ugly Christmas Sweaters, I drew up a revised design on grid paper and wrote myself out a pattern to follow. Then set to work cutting all the pieces. This design includes life size sweaters, mittens and hats.

The front is made using a new collection by Tula Pink called Holiday Homies. And the backing is Makin' Waves in Ink from the True Colors collection, also by Tula Pink for Free Spirit Fabrics. The boldness of this print is a great contrast to the front.

What I love most is that those big blocks allow for those Holiday Homies fabrics to shine!

Of course, the quilting is my usual organic wavy lines using my walking foot. I used plain white Gutermann thread both on top and in the bobbin. The retro look of those adorable deer and the graphic look of those blue triangle Christmas trees are so cute on the binding!

The "Sweater Weather" quilt finished at 54" x 60"
and was the 57th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Imagine my surprise!!!

I'm a cover girl!

Quilty magazine November/December '17 issue, includes my Sweater Weather quilt and can be found at your fave fabric shop or newsstand beginning today!!!!

Let's Bee Social # 139

It seems like it was a long time ago when I finished this one....

But my Ugly Christmas Sweaters quilt sold on Sunday! So she's now on her way to Teresa in Ohio. Someone will be having a cozy Christmas!

How timely! I also received this email from Angie on Sunday....

Hi Lorna,
Finally the binding is done! I can't figure out how to post on your QAL page, maybe because I don't have a blog. So here is my final product.

When I asked if I could have permission to share this beautiful finish on the blog, Angie said....

You can absolutely share the photos, no problem.
Details? Like binding takes the longest to finish, different fabric as I ran out of the other red, added Santa as he needs to be part of any Christmas project and might add some more buttons. Like a bear and a drum for the stocking, some lights on the tree, snowflakes but haven't decided yet.

Oh and the backing is the same fabric as yours. If some of the shoulders seem smaller, well I thought I'd remember the cutting instructions after having done some of the blocks but obviously I didn't , but I think it gives it more character!

Ugly Christmas Sweaters - HST Bonus Sewing Machine Mat Tutorial

The instructions for all 21 of the blocks in the Ugly Christmas Sweaters QAL have been given. Today's tutorial is for the Bonus 2.5" half square triangles! If you have quilted along, and have made the 20 blocks for the Maxi size quilt, you will have 40 Bonus 2.5" HST's.

I chose to use my HST's to make this beautiful 16" x 25" Sewing Machine Mat. That way I will always have a reminder of the Ugly Christmas Sweaters quilt, how much I enjoyed making it, and how much fun it was to have you all quilting along with me!

This 16" x 25" Sewing Machine Mat was made using 40 pieces of 2.5" squares. I used my Bonus HST's, but any 2.5" squares will work to follow this tutorial.

Here are the requirements:
40 - 2.5" squares

32 - 1.5" x 2.5" strips
9  - 1.5" x 14.5" strips
2  - 1.5" x 25.5" strips
2 - 2.25" x 42" strips of Binding
Batting and Backing to cover 20" x 30"

Step 1:  Arrange your 2.5" squares into a grid with 8 pieces per row and using 5 rows.

Step 2:  Sew the 1.5" x 2.5" strips to the bottoms of the pieces in the first 4 rows.

Step 3:  Sew the pieces into columns.

Step 4:  Sew the 1.5" x 14.5" strips between each of the columns.

Step 5:  Sew the 1.5" x 25.5" strips along the top and bottom.

Step 6:  Layer the backing, batting and finished top. And baste.

Step 7:  Quilt the layers. And then the trim edges.

Step 8:  Apply the binding.

Step 8:  And ENJOY!

You can click here to go to the Ugly Christmas Sweaters Quilt Along page for all the details. On that page you will find the layouts and quilt sizes and also see the full schedule.
