Smitten Kitten

Introducing Smitten Kitten! It was over two years ago that I shared the Dog Gone Cute and I can't believe it has taken me this long to come up with a cat pattern that would be it's equivalent. But for me it was worth the wait and I couldn't be happier with these sweet kittens!

Here you can see the Smitten Kitten quilt hanging out on the hay wagon in front of the bean field and with the beautiful blue sky in the background.

The kittens were made using a fat quarter bundle of the Daisy Days collection by Keera Job for Riley Blake Designs, solids for the ears, noses, eyes and occasional white striped cat face, added for interest.

The Daisy Days collection made it easy for me. You know how much I have been challenging myself to use more prints in my quilts. This collection has a wonderful selection of colours and different types of prints.

Large florals....

Dainty tone on tones....

Small florals....

A great mix that also includes a stripe with flowers.

As a first for me, for the background I used Essex Yarn-Dyed in Charcoal. And for the backing I ordered a Widescreen Crosshatch in Black. I ordered enough for the width of the quilt. So because I like to quilt parallel to the crossgrain of the backing, this was quilted from top to bottom, instead of my usual side to side.

I used a medium grey thread both on top and in the bobbin to quilt those organic wavy lines. But then used black thread for attaching and finishing the binding.

The "Smitten Kitten" quilt finished at 64" x 78"
and was the 58th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Kitten Approved!

The Smitten Kitten pattern provides instructions for making the blocks in both a 12" square or 6" square finished size. There are 7 different quilt settings included, ranging in size from 15" square to 78" square. Pattern includes fabric requirements, cutting and assembly instructions for all 7 settings.

And you can find the Smitten Kitten pattern here.

7 March 2015

Sew Sisters Sunday Stash on a Saturday

Happy Mail from Sew Sisters Quilt Shop
Remember last week when I shared about that Bundle Bonanza sale that was happening at Sew Sisters Quilt Shop?  Well, I wasn't kidding when I encouraged you to check it out.  And that I was going to take advantage.  I did....

Thank goodness the fabric had been packaged in sturdy plastic bags!
Everything was just fine.
Phew!

These cute little bundles of fat quarters were part of the Bundle Bonaza.  We have 5 beautifully packaged fat quarters of sea creatures from Timeless Treasures.  And 5 fat quarters of Pepe In Paris in lime.

There were fat quarter bundles of black and white prints, too.  But I wanted MORE!!!

From the Evening Blooms collection by Riley Blake Designs, I ordered some half meter and some full meter cuts of Wallpaper in white, Dots in both black and in white, Stripe in black, Floral in white, and Large Floral in white.  Also by Riley Blake Designs were - from the Mod Studio collection - Damask in white and Geometric in black.  The other cuts were from the Essentials VII collection by Studio E Fabrics - Houndstooth in black and white and from the Fantasy collection by Newcastle Fabrics - Daisy in black.

If you are interested to know what these beautiful black and white prints are destined for...  Check out this post from last Friday and meet Zazzles!

Prepare yourself for some funky looking ZebraZ!

Finish It Up Friday - Giggles Up!

This top, made from a charm pack of Giggles by Me & My Sister Designs and some yummy Kona cotton solids, was sitting on a shelf and has waited long enough.  Time to get this quilted UP!  The Giggles Up top was finished way back in July!  You can read the original post here.

This big baby barely fit across the width of the old hay wagon.  And the top row of blocks is hanging over the back of the rack.  All my quilt holder helpers were in school.

After completing the quilt top, the next job was to search around for a wideback fabric that would suit this fresh and fun top.  I had my eye on some Widescreen by Carolyn Friedlander for Robert Kaufman Fabrics.  I contacted Pam of Mad About Patchwork to see if she could help me get my hands on some.

Sure enough, she came through!  My Widescreen in Pacific arrived.  Then I dragged my feet.  And kept putting this project on the back burner.

I set to work getting ready to baste this big beauty.  Pressed the backing fabric.  Set up my quilting frame.  Laid on the backing and batting.  Following the wise advice of Amanda Jean, I spent at least an hour trimming the loose threads from the back of this quilt top.

While basting, the one thing I realized is...  I really need to buy some more pins.

The quilting is a combination of straight line quilting between the blocks and extended zig zag quilting on each row of blocks.  Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts gives this quilting stitch a really cute name - Honeycomb quilting.  I have used this stitch for quilting before.  I love the look of it mixed with the straight lines.

The mitered border (tutorial here!) was framed with this saturated rainbow of diagonal stripes from the Hello Sunshine collection for Riley Blake Designs.

Giggles Up finished at 82" x 94" after quilting and I approximate it will end up around 80” x 92” after washing and drying.  Here it is shown on my daughter's double bed.

This quilt finish was the 15th use of my 100 labels ordered from

Here is the underside of my label....

Giggles Up! is now listed in my Etsy store along with other Quilts for Sale.
