Smitten Kitten

Introducing Smitten Kitten! It was over two years ago that I shared the Dog Gone Cute and I can't believe it has taken me this long to come up with a cat pattern that would be it's equivalent. But for me it was worth the wait and I couldn't be happier with these sweet kittens!

Here you can see the Smitten Kitten quilt hanging out on the hay wagon in front of the bean field and with the beautiful blue sky in the background.

The kittens were made using a fat quarter bundle of the Daisy Days collection by Keera Job for Riley Blake Designs, solids for the ears, noses, eyes and occasional white striped cat face, added for interest.

The Daisy Days collection made it easy for me. You know how much I have been challenging myself to use more prints in my quilts. This collection has a wonderful selection of colours and different types of prints.

Large florals....

Dainty tone on tones....

Small florals....

A great mix that also includes a stripe with flowers.

As a first for me, for the background I used Essex Yarn-Dyed in Charcoal. And for the backing I ordered a Widescreen Crosshatch in Black. I ordered enough for the width of the quilt. So because I like to quilt parallel to the crossgrain of the backing, this was quilted from top to bottom, instead of my usual side to side.

I used a medium grey thread both on top and in the bobbin to quilt those organic wavy lines. But then used black thread for attaching and finishing the binding.

The "Smitten Kitten" quilt finished at 64" x 78"
and was the 58th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Kitten Approved!

The Smitten Kitten pattern provides instructions for making the blocks in both a 12" square or 6" square finished size. There are 7 different quilt settings included, ranging in size from 15" square to 78" square. Pattern includes fabric requirements, cutting and assembly instructions for all 7 settings.

And you can find the Smitten Kitten pattern here.

Rainbow Unicorn {mini quilts}

I absolutely love my readers. They are so clever. And helpful. And the loveliest group of people you could ever want to meet. They keep me inspired and happy to create.

Just a few weeks ago, I received an email from Carla. She wanted to know if I had a unicorn design that was traditionally pieced. I did not.....

But soon got working on drawing one up!

The proof is in the pudding. I soon had a pattern written up for a Rainbow Unicorn block. The first one I made finished at 24" square, including a 2" border. But I did not stop there. I had to see if this could be made half sized....

And made a matching Rainbow Unicorn that finishes at 12" square with a 1" border.

I used the same fabrics for each mini quilt. All of the brights used to make the manes are from Northcott Fabrics. The background is a pink fabric that has been in my stash 4 EVER.

The quilting was performed using my walking foot to create organic wavy lines with white thread both on top and in the bobbin.

I added corner tabs for hanging these quilts. I took 3" squares, pressed them on the diagonal, placed them on the top corners of the finished quilts with raw edges even with the edges of the quilt, and then stitched them in place before sewing on the binding. Then all you need to do is drill a hole in the center of a yard stick after cutting it to the correct length. And you can hang these quilts invisibly.

The backing and bindings were made using a 1 yard cut of Daisy Patch in Pink Flambe from the Fresh Cut collection by Basic Grey for Moda. I have been working hard on using fabrics found in my stash this year. Hooray for these stash only makes!

The "Rainbow Unicorn" quilts finished at 24.5" square and 12.5" square
and were the 43rd and 44th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

The Rainbow Unicorn pattern provides instructions for three sizes. The blocks are 10" 20" and 40" square and finish at 12", 24" and 48" square including the borders.

The Rainbow Unicorn also NOW comes with instructions to make a solid horn or a spiral horn.

If you have purchased this pattern previously and would like the instructions for the spiral horn, please send me an email and I will forward you an updated copy.

You can find the Rainbow Unicorn pdf pattern here in my shop.

Flowers {make me HAPPY!}

Finally. I have a finish to share!

This is the Flowers quilt. It was finished this past week. And on Wednesday I finally was able to install the plywood panels on the side of the "new" old hay wagon so that I can display my quilts outside for a photo shoot.

Here is an uncropped photo to show how I have the quilt rigged up. I attached a couple of old bale strings to the ends of a board to hoist up the sail. Depending on how much wind we get, I just may be able to put this show on the road!

This quilt really makes me HAPPY!

I love all the bright, fun colours and prints that I was able to choose from Mad About Patchwork. And especially the Blueberry Park: Fence in Breakers. This print was used for the strips and 9 patch units that make the sky. And was also used for the binding.

Some of the other prints I chose are.....

Blueberry Park: Flowers in Grellow, Canary and Goldfish
Blueberry Park: Sunflower in Candy Pink
Sun Print: Endpaper in Azure
True Colors: Zen Dot In Green
True Colors: Divvy Dot In Violet
Macrame: Braidy Fuschia
C+S Basics: Netorious in Plummy
C+S Basics: Netorious in Teal
C+S Basics: Sprinkle in Pickup Truck

AND Abacus: Grow in Sky is the perfectly subtle low volume fabric used for the background.

These wee flowers are my absolute favourite blocks in this quilt and I am sure they will be a welcome sight once we are in the middle of the long hard winter that is soon to come.

For the quilting, I used Light Grey Omni from Superior Threads, both on top and in the bobbin. I could have used white, but I love how this helps the quilting to show up. And it blends in well with the super soft backing that is Widescreen in Grey by Carolyn Friedlander.

The Flowers design is available in two sizes. Directions are also included for this square 70" size. Perfect for a lap quilt or used as a pretty wall hanging to decorate a big bare wall. You can check out all the details for this pattern in my shop here.

As I previously mentioned, the Old Hay Wagon won't be used for a photo shoot ever again. She's being retired. The last time I used it I thought I was going to die. The sides are both leaning heavily to the one side. It's broken and it's old. I know this new old hay wagon is not as pretty. But at least I no longer have to worry about sacrificing my life for some decent pics.

The "Flowers" quilt finished at 70" x 90"
and was the 12th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.
