Chicken Ranch

What's this? Well.... It's not another Christmas quilt...

This is something that rarely happens. The Chicken Ranch was a finished quilt TOP that I shared back in late August in a Let's Bee Social post here. And then this quilt top hung in my sewing room for 6 months.

That is something unusual for me. I normally finish a top and then get it quilted up right away before starting something new. This is due to a promise that I made myself back when I started quilting. I know how easy it is to get swept away with the adrenalin rush that comes along with the excitement of starting a new project.

However, leaving this quilt top hanging there, unquilted, did give me the opportunity to enter it as an unquilted top in our little local fair this past fall. Only to be told that the seams were pressed "wrong". You see, the judges go through a training process that still stresses some longstanding (dare I say outdated?) views of what is the right way of doing things. And I am a press-all-the-seams-open kinda girl.

I quilted with my usual organic wavy lines, using Omni in grey on top to blend in with the background and a soft green in the bobbin to blend in with the backing.

The backing is a wideback print from the Northcott Fabrics Artisan Spirit collection. After quilting and squaring up the edges, I used the trimmings to make the binding. This is also the same fabric used in the Mama Hens wings.

This long overdue "Chicken Ranch" quilt finished at 55" x 70"
and was the 20th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

Mama Chicken 12" quilt block tutorial

This one's for you, Carol!!!!

I ran into Carol at the Quilt Show and she requested a chicken pattern, so I promised her I would come up with a chicken block. Today I am sharing this free block tutorial.

As, I mentioned previously in this post, Carol reads this book to her granddaughter and it features a main character that is a chicken. What won't we do for our children and grandchildren? If it has anything to do with making them a quilt they will love, we are all for it!

Hope you all enjoy this free tutorial!

STOP: Stitch, Trim, Open & Press. The STOP method is the mainstay for the making of the blocks found in this pattern. To perform the STOP method, align a square (A) or rectangle (C) on the corner of the unit (B) with right sides facing together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner and sew along this diagonal line. Trim a ¼” seam. Finger press the seams open and then press with a hot iron. Press the seams open to reduce bulk.

READ THROUGH ENTIRE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BEGININNING.

Constructing the MAMA CHICKEN Block:

Step 1:  Sew the White (C) and the White (D) rectangles on the sides of the Dark Blue (B) square.

Step 2:  Sew the Dark Yellow (E) rectangle to the Background (A) square.

Step 3:  Use the STOP method to add the Background (A) square to the ends of the White (F) rectangle.

Step 4:  Take the units made previously and sew them together. Sew the unit made in Step 1 on the side of the unit made in Step 3. Sew the unit made in Step 2 on the other side of the unit made in Step 3. Use the STOP method to add the Background (G) square.

Step 5:  Sew the Red (F) rectangle on the end of the Background (N) rectangle. Use the STOP method to add the White (L) rectangle and the Light Blue (K) square on the ends. Sew the units made in Step 4 on the end.

Step 6:  Use the STOP method to add the Light Blue (A) and (O) squares on the corners of the Dark Blue (P) rectangle. Add the Light Blue (J) rectangle to the top.

Step 7:  Use the STOP method to add the White (A) square to the corner of the Light Blue (H) rectangle. Sew the White (E) rectangle on top.

Step 8:  Use the STOP method to add the Background (K) squares to the ends of the Light Blue (M) rectangle.

Step 9:  Sew the unit made in Step 7 onto the side of the unit made in Step 6. Sew the unit made in Step 8 onto the bottom. Sew the Background (M) rectangle to the side. Sew the unit made in Step 5 onto the top to complete the Mama Chicken block. Mama Chicken blocks will measure 12.5” x 12.5” and will finish at 12” x 12”.
